Unexpected Rossö

Out of the blue yesterday, Jeremy announced that he would like to take us to a sandy beach. Although there are miles and miles of coastline here, many of the beaches are rocky, so a sandy beach is a special treat.

The place Jeremy wanted to go was on the nearby island of Rossö. We knew about Rossö, but had never been to it. Since we live on an island (Tjärnö), drive over two more (Daftö and Öddö) on a regular basis, and frequently visit a fourth (Saltö), I figured Rossö would just be more of the same.

While Rossö is very close to where we live, there's no bridge connecting the two, so you have to drive out to the mainland, then back onto Rossö. It probably would have been faster to get there by boat.

When we found the sandy beach, it was so windy that I immediately asked Jeremy if we should leave. He looked around and found a small circle of sand surrounded by foot-high grass. When we laid down on the sand, the grass was just enough to block the wind.

We all flopped down on our bellies and soaked up a feeling we've not had in months: HEAT! We cooked in two directions, from the sand below and from the sun above. It was glorious.

We all tried to take naps, and I think only Jeremy succeeded. Savannah got antsy and ran around to explore. There was an outcropping of rock not far away, so she ran over to it and climbed out. We waved to one another and she said something, but it was completely drowned out by the roar of the wind and the noise of the sea.

When we started to overheat, we'd sit up or stand to cool off in the pounding wind. It was so windy, that the water had only windsurfers and kite surfers in it. I don't understand how they control the kites to prevent themselves from being dragged into a rock, but it was fascinating to watch them race up and down the coast.

When we were finally ready to leave, we noticed many people walking along the main road. Eager to discover what they were doing, we drove in the direction they were coming from and came upon a little local festival.

We had arrived at the end of it, but the cafe was still open, so we stopped in for an afternoon fika. On the cashier's recommendation, Jeremy and I both had a dish that consisted of a slice of poundcake with a thin chocolate swirl, topped with whipped cream, a few mandarin orange slices, and chocolate shavings. It was delicious. Coincidentally, one of our friends from Tjärnö was also there with her kids. It can be a very small world out here at times.

After our snack, we walked around a bit more and found another small sandy beach. The waves were small and steady.  The girls searched for shells and drew in the sand. A couple of brave kids splashed in the water. Ours weren't even wearing their swimsuits.

Rossö was similar to the other islands out here, just bigger. I hadn't thought there would be a cafe, and I wish we had something like that on Tjärnö. I didn't expect to be interested in Rossö, but I was. Because I wasn't expecting much, I didn't take a camera with me, so I don't have any pictures to document the day. I didn't want to forget about it, though, so I'm hoping this will be enough to remember it by.
